ICANN free from US Control
The internet regulator Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is now free from US Control. Hitherto, the US department of commerce (DoC) had overall control of the conduct of the ICANN having a predominant say in the working of the ICANN. In recent years, various countries and organizations have expressed their dissatisfaction over the predominant control of US government over the ICANN. Now, the US Government has decided to loosen its grip over the ICANN vide the new agreement signed between them which grants greater autonomy to the ICANN. With this development, the ICANN has now become an organization accountable solely to the internet community, free from government control which opens up a new chapter in the democratization of the internet.
