First Child pornography case registered at Chennai under IT Amendment Act, 2008

The cyber cell of the Chennai Police became the first to apply the Section 67-B IT AA, 2008 which came into force on 27th October, 2009. The Section 67-B ITAA, 2008 sternly deal with the offence of publishing or transmitting Child pornography material through electronic medium. However, it was Dutch National; Will Heum living at Chennai who was arrested by the cyber crime police who was found indulged in the felonious act of uploading child pornographic materials on the internet. The Chennai police got the tip off of the crime from the Child Exploitation Online Protection Centre in Germany through Interpol that led to the arrest of Heum. The IT AA, 2008 has considered the offence of child pornography as a heinous one and has made it cognizable and non-bailable. The accused, Will Heum, if convicted, could face a jail term of 5 years and with fine which may extend to ten lakh rupees. However, it should be noted that the section on second conviction enhances the jail term to 7 years. Itís nice to see cyber crime cell making waves under the Information Technology Amendment Act, 2008 with the help from their foreign counterparts.
